YZ is a french/english artist in between graffiti and stencil. She uses different techniques to create her minimalist and architectural designs. In 2003 she initiated the project « Open Your Eyes », a giant’s face painted on to the tombstone-like electrical cabinets of fifty or so Paris streets. The selected locations are crossroads, stations and intersections. They symbolize the web of communities, exchanges and sharing between cultures. Painted on to the network of electrical cabinets (which are supposed to bring us light), these faces, in turn, constitute a giant face superposed over the map of the city; an evolving fresco which brings the spotlight to all the smaller struggles for global change. A way of saying that little is needed to make oneself heard. YZ brought this concept internationally and the face has been traveling worldwide. YZ’s work is inspired by the urban environment and gives a poetic view of our living space. Each project she is putting up in the street has a specific meaning and is integrated in the space. As a complementary work, YZ is also using video art as well as electronic music. She is mixing all these media to create outdoor and indoor installations.
